## What Is an NFA Item?

The National Firearms Act (NFA) regulates certain firearms and firearm accessories that require additional ATF approval before transfer to an individual.

The most popular and well known NFA item. A silencer, also called a suppressor, is a metal tube attached to the muzzle of a firearm that reduces the noise and flash of a gunshot. It works by slowing and cooling high pressure expanding gasses through internal chambers and baffles before they exit into the air.

A short barreled rifle is any rifle with a barrel length of less than 16 inches, or any weapon made from a rifle with an overall length of less than 26 inches.

A short barreled shotgun is a firearm with a shoulder stock and one or more barrels under 18 inches long, or an overall modified length under 26 inches.

A machine gun is a fully automatic firearm built to fire bullets rapidly and continuously with a single pull of a trigger.

An AOW stands for "Any Other Weapon", a legal classification under the NFA for unique or concealable firearms that do not fit standard definitions like rifles, shotguns, or traditional handguns.
